Exploring Common Woven Fabrics: Types, Characteristics, and Uses

There are many different fabrics available today that are used in a wide range of applications. As technology has improved and our standard of living has increased, fabrics have evolved to meet our needs for comfort, aesthetics, and practicality. In this article, I’ll go over some common fabrics, what they’re like, and what they’re used for, so you can make informed choices about the fabrics you use.

1. Polyester Pongee

Polyester pongee is a woven fabric made from polyester DTY (drawn textured yarn) in both the warp and weft. It has a smooth, flat surface and is lightweight and firm. It’s durable, elastic, shiny, doesn’t shrink, is easy to clean, and dries quickly. It feels soft and comfortable. You can also get it with various post-dyeing and finishing treatments to give it water resistance, down-proofing, fire resistance, cold resistance, anti-static properties, a matte finish, or lamination. You can get it in full elastic, half elastic, plain weave, twill weave, stripes, checks, and jacquard. It’s lightweight, has a soft sheen, and feels nice, so it’s good for down jackets, cotton coats, jackets, windbreakers, and sportswear.

2. Taffeta

Polyester taffeta is a woven plain weave fabric made from polyester FDY (full draw yarn) in both the warp and weft. It has a smooth, elastic hand feel, is shiny, comes in bright colors, and doesn’t wrinkle much. It shrinks less than 5%. You can also get it with various post-dyeing and finishing treatments to give it water resistance, fire resistance, stain resistance, cold resistance, anti-static properties, or a matte finish. You can get it in plain weave, twill weave, stripes, checks, and jacquard. It’s great for lining because it helps the garment keep its shape, so it doesn’t get deformed or wrinkled, and it makes the garment look more structured and smooth.

3. Nylon Taffeta

Nylon taffeta is a woven fabric made from nylon FDY (full draw yarn) in both the warp and weft. It’s 100% nylon. You can also get it with various post-dyeing and finishing treatments to give it water resistance, dust resistance, stain resistance, cold resistance, anti-static properties, moisture absorption, or meatpacking capabilities. You can get it in plain weave, twill weave, stripes, checks, and jacquard. It’s a fine, soft fabric with a plain weave surface, so it’s good for down jackets, cotton coats, jackets, windbreakers, sportswear, camping tents, and sleeping bags.

4. Taslon

Taslon is a woven fabric with polyester FDY in the warp and polyester ATY (air textured yarn) in the weft. It’s also called “polyester Taslon.” It has the properties of cotton and comes in plain weave, twill weave, checks, stripes, jacquard, and other patterns. You can also get it with various post-dyeing and finishing treatments to give it a unique style. It’s great for jackets and windbreakers. Technically, Taslon is 100% nylon, but some people make it with 100% polyester as an imitation. It’s a popular fabric in the fashion industry and for functional clothing because it has a unique texture and can be made to look different in various ways.

5. Polyester-Nylon Blend

Polyester-nylon blend is a fabric made of nylon yarn and glossy polyester yarn, with different textures and shimmering effects. It looks very shiny under the sunlight or neon lights. After dyeing and finishing, it can have water resistance, anti-static, and down-proof functions. It can be plain weave, coarse twill, fine twill, checks, and other specifications. It is widely used in home textiles, down jackets, jackets, windbreakers, especially in high-end and fashionable products because of its bright luster and unique visual effects.

6. Lightweight Fabric

Lightweight fabric is divided into semi-light and full-light. Semi-light uses 50D glossy yarn in the warp and 50D filament in the weft. Full-light uses 50D glossy yarn in both the warp and weft. Both are plain weave structures, commonly found in specifications like 190T, 210T, and 230T, which are ideal lining materials. They are light and soft, often used in high-end fashion, outerwear, and sportswear linings to enhance the comfort and aesthetics of garments.

7. Nylon-Cotton Blend

Nylon-cotton blend is a fabric woven from nylon yarn and pure cotton yarn on an air-jet loom. It is suitable for casual wear and fashion. It can be plain weave, twill weave, satin weave, matte finish, checks, jacquard patterns, and so on. The fabric surface is glossy and colorful, with a smooth and full hand feel. It is suitable for windbreakers, cotton coats, jackets, and other styles.
